The Southern Hotel is located at 445 South D Street, Perris, California 92570. Built in 1886, it is Perris's oldest surviving commercial building. The structure was constructed by Swiss immigrant couple Bernardo and Marcellina Bernasconi. It is a two-story, wooden, rectangular building with horizontal siding. The facade features a door, two windows with decorative crowns, and an open wooden porch with four support posts facing west toward S. D Street. This distinctive design reflects late nineteenth-century residential hotel construction prevalent in the region.
From hotel to residential to museum
The Southern Hotel operated as a commercial establishment serving the San Jacinto–Perris stage line, providing lodging for travelers on this regional route until approximately 1919. It was subsequently converted to a private residence around 1919 and remained occupied by the Bernasconi family for many decades. The building maintained its original character and construction methods throughout this long period. However, the structure encountered severe challenges in 1987 when it suffered two devastating arson fires, placing it at risk for demolition and loss.
The Motte brothers purchased and carefully restored the fire-damaged building in 1990, converting it into a heritage museum and office location.
